Lookalike research: start from the customers you already win.
Most prospecting starts with a filter: industry, headcount, region, maybe a technology. Filters are useful, but they describe a market, not a buyer. Two companies can share every filter value and still be opposites: one is about to sign, the other will never pick up. The difference lives in details a filter cannot see.
Your best customers are the sharpest filter you own
Think about the accounts where the deal moved fast and the customer stayed. They share a shape: a team size that matches your onboarding, a problem your product visibly solves, a buying moment you recognized early. That shape is a pattern, and patterns can be searched for. Lookalike research takes the customers you already win and looks for new accounts that resemble them in the ways that mattered.
This is why Twelve by Nine asks about your current customers during onboarding. Naming your best customers is not trivia; it is the targeting. The research pipeline uses them as the reference pattern, so "good fit" means "resembles the accounts where you succeed," not "matches a dropdown."
Resemblance plus timing beats resemblance alone
A lookalike with no reason to talk today is still a cold call. So each account also gets checked for timing: hiring that signals growth, funding that frees budget, an expansion or migration that creates the problem you solve. The daily twelve are accounts that look like your wins and have something happening right now.
The report makes both halves visible. "Lookalike of" names the customer the account resembles, so you can reuse the story that won that deal. "Why now" names the signal, so your first line is about their week, not your product.
It keeps learning
Lookalike research is not a one-time setup. When you rate each prospect and report which ones materialized, the pattern updates: the wins refine what "looks like a win" means for you. The twelves you get in month two are sharper than the twelves you got in week one, because the targeting learned from your real outcomes.
